Construction is a high-ticket, locally decided category. A builder in Western Sydney and one in the CBD barely compete, and buyers ask about licensing, approvals and cost per square metre before they ask for a quote. This build is a directory of commercial and civil contractors across Sydney, designed to be found by both search pages and AI answers.
The Challenge
- Head terms such as commercial construction Sydney and civil contractors Sydney are crowded.
- Buyers research compliance and process first, so a page that only lists contractors does not answer what they are asking.
- A directory in a high-ticket sector is only worth using if the listings can be trusted.
The Strategy
1. Query trees built on Sydney's regulatory language
Head terms were commercial construction Sydney, civil contractors Sydney and structural engineering builders NSW. Pages answer the chain around each:
- Cost: "Best commercial builder in Western Sydney cost per square meter"
- Comparison: "Top-tier vs mid-tier construction contractors Sydney CBD"
- Process: "DA approval process construction Sydney council regulations"
Supporting terms cover SafeWork NSW, the National Construction Code and material categories.
2. A quality filter on the data
- Contractor, licensing and project data was pulled with Python scripts.
- Businesses rated below 3.5 stars were removed and 301-redirected to stronger category pages.
- Titles rotated across five sentence patterns naming real areas such as Parramatta, Penrith, Northern Beaches and the CBD.
- Missing attributes display a dash, never "N/A" or filler.
3. Named authorship
One author card on every template links the directory to an identifiable expert.
The Result
Search Console, 25 to 31 October 2026, the first week of data:
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Total clicks | 37 (36 from Australia) |
| Total impressions | 11,800 (11,052 from Australia) |
| Average CTR | 0.3% |
| Average position | 40.1 overall, 40.4 in Australia |

More than 11,000 impressions and 36 clicks inside seven days shows the pages were picked up quickly by the right market, with nearly all of the traffic coming from Australia.
What happens next
An average position of 40 is the starting point for a new build in a competitive sector. The next steps are to push the pages that already draw impressions higher, add cost and approval comparison tables, and strengthen internal links between the suburb pages and the service pages.
How to apply this
- Tie brand, domain and author to recognised entities with schema.
- Group queries into intent clusters so one template answers the price question and the compliance question.
- Set hard quality limits in the data pipeline and redirect failures cleanly.
- Structure answers as definitions, lists and short tables that AI overviews can cite.
