Service Programmatic SEO & GEO

UK patients choose between the NHS and private care, and the choice is made locally. Someone in St Albans wants a private GP or specialist in Hertfordshire, and asks about NHS referral, insurer cover and waiting times before they ask about price. This project ran one healthcare directory framework across three counties at once, Hertfordshire, Hampshire and Essex, which makes it a useful side-by-side comparison.

The Challenge

  • Health is a high-trust topic, and Google filters out thin or anonymous directories.
  • Local searches are split across dozens of towns, so no single page can serve a county.
  • Three counties on one template risk pages that look alike and compete with each other.

The Strategy

1. Query trees built on how UK patients choose care

Head terms were private GP Hertfordshire, private hospitals Hampshire and specialist consultants Essex. Pages answered the chain around each:

  • Cost and insurance: "Private consultant appointment cost with Bupa or AXA cover in Chelmsford"
  • Comparison: "NHS vs private waiting times for orthopaedic consultation Southampton"
  • Process: "How to get an NHS referral to a private specialist in Hertfordshire"

2. County-specific pages, one quality bar

  • Clinic, practitioner and service data was collected with Python scripts.
  • Providers rated below 3.5 stars were removed and 301-redirected to stronger category pages, which keeps link equity inside the site.
  • Titles rotated across five sentence patterns naming real towns: St Albans and Watford, Winchester and Basingstoke, Colchester and Chelmsford.
  • Missing data shows a dash instead of a broken string.

3. Named authorship

A single author card sits on every content page, tying the three directories to one accountable expert.

The Result

Search Console, 8 to 28 October 2026, UK traffic:

County Clicks UK impressions CTR Avg. position
Hampshire 108 32,244 0.3% 24.0
Hertfordshire 71 20,058 0.3% 25.5
Essex 1 649 0.2% 59.0
Total 180 52,951

Hampshire and Hertfordshire sit at an average position of about 24 and 25, at the top of page three. Essex is at an earlier stage of indexing, with a position of 59 and 649 impressions. Side by side, the three counties show the same framework at different stages of maturity.

What happens next

Hampshire and Hertfordshire are already drawing tens of thousands of impressions, so internal links and richer comparison tables on their best town pages are the way to turn those impressions into clicks. Essex gets the same treatment as it matures.

How to apply this

  1. Run one entity-linked schema pattern across every county so the directories reinforce each other.
  2. Group queries into intent clusters so one template answers the treatment question and the insurance question.
  3. Filter out weak providers in the pipeline and keep the redirects clean.
  4. Write definitions, lists and short tables so generative engines can parse and cite the pages.
