To become an SEO specialist, learn how search works, run real sites, document measurable results and move from carrying out tasks to owning decisions. Employers care more about a portfolio of outcomes than about a degree.
A six-step route
- Learn how search works. Crawling, indexing, ranking and what a search result page is made of. Use Google's own documentation as the source of truth.
- Learn the free tools. Start with Google Search Console and GA4, then a crawler such as Screaming Frog, then a paid keyword tool when you can.
- Run a real site. A blog, a small business site or a volunteer project will do. You need a site where you can change things and see the result.
- Keep a record. For each change, write what you did, why, the date and what moved. This becomes your portfolio.
- Get your first role. Most people enter as an SEO executive. Use your record in the CV. See SEO specialist vs SEO executive for what each level expects.
- Move to ownership. Ask to own an audit, a migration or a content plan from start to finish. The step from executive to specialist is the step from carrying out tasks to being accountable for a result.
What to put in a portfolio
One Malaysian guide says agencies hire for results, and recommends CV lines that carry a number, a time frame and a business outcome. For example: "Rebuilt the category pages of an e-commerce site and raised organic orders by X% in six months." Keep the claims you can defend in an interview.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to become an SEO specialist?
Most people move from entry level to specialist in two to five years, depending on how much hands-on and technical work they do. Time matters less than the amount of real sites and results you have handled.
Can I become an SEO specialist without experience?
You can start without a job. Build and run your own site, document what you change and what moves, and apply for executive roles with that record.
