Hiring an SEO Specialist

What Does an SEO Specialist Do?

Impact: Foundational Difficulty: Beginner Date: 2026-10-22

An SEO specialist spends the month finding what limits a site's organic traffic, fixing the most valuable problems first and reporting the effect. The tasks below are the ones that fill most weeks, in the order they usually appear.

Audit and diagnose

The first piece of work is a read of Search Console, analytics and a crawl of the site. The output is a ranked list: what blocks indexing, which pages lose clicks, which searches the site almost wins, and which pages compete with each other. This is the base for every later decision. My SEO audit follows this format.

Fix technical blockers

Typical items are pages that should be indexed but are not, redirect chains, duplicate or thin pages, slow templates, broken structured data and sitemap errors. These are often small changes with a large effect, so they come before new content.

Plan the content

The specialist maps the topics customers search, decides which pages already cover them and which are missing, and writes a brief for each new page: the question it answers, the headings, the proof to include and the pages it should link to. Planning topics as a group, rather than one keyword at a time, is what builds topical authority.

Improve on-page elements

Titles, headings, internal links, schema and the first paragraph of a page are rewritten so that Google and a reader see the answer at once.

Build trust signals

Google and AI search tools favour sources they can identify. The specialist makes sure the business name, address, profiles and structured data match everywhere, and earns mentions and links from relevant sites. I cover the AI side under GEO and AI search.

Measure and report

Each month the specialist reports on search visits, enquiries and the pages that produced them, with what changed and what comes next. A report that lists only rankings does not show whether the work paid.

What is not the specialist's job

A specialist does not control rankings, and cannot promise a position. Nor do they replace a web developer, a copywriter or a designer, though a good one works closely with all three.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a week does SEO take?

It varies with site size. A small business site may need a few hours a week of ongoing work after an initial audit, while a large site with many templates needs a full-time owner. Ask the specialist to state hours or deliverables, not only a monthly fee.

Does an SEO specialist write the content?

Sometimes. Many specialists brief, edit and optimise content and leave the writing to writers or subject experts. Clarify who writes, who approves and who publishes before you start.
