Where a hospital group loses patients before the first appointment

Directories answer find a doctor before your own directory does

Nine results came back for my search on 14 October 2026 for a private hospital doctor in Malaysia: third-party doctor directories, a medical-travel marketplace and two expatriate guides. No hospital's own directory appeared. A patient who meets your consultant on another listing may book through another form.

Each promotional page waits for an advertising approval

MOH says every advertisement for health services offered by private hospitals needs prior approval from the Medicine Advertisements Board, and self-regulation is not permitted. The Board takes one advertisement format per application, so a site rebuilt page by page can spend months in that queue.

Best hospital searches are settled by award pages and listicles

Malaysia has about 290 private hospitals and nearly 19,000 private beds, by a consultancy count reported in July 2026. My search for best private hospital in malaysia on 14 October 2026 returned hospital award pages, directory listicles and a guide for Indonesian readers. MMC guidance bars practitioners from claiming to be the best, so the winning page persuades with facts.

Why do directories win generic find a doctor searches?

They cover every hospital, and patients who have not picked one yet start broad. Patients do also search your directory by name, so win that search first: one crawlable profile per consultant, with specialty, branch and sessions in plain text, not hidden behind a search box.

What can a private hospital say to someone comparing it with a government hospital?

Process facts it can stand behind: getting an appointment without a referral, what a deposit covers, which panels it accepts and how charges are explained. Skip claims about better care. MMC guidance treats best and first claims as contentious, and this searcher wants practical answers.

How should screening package pages handle promotions that change?

Keep one URL per package all year and put the price and validity period in a separate block. MAB policy lists charges and validity period among the changes to an approved format that need only written notice. Describe the tests the way standalone screening labs do, so the package page keeps its rankings while the offer moves.

How much cost information should a hospital publish?

As much as you can state accurately. People split this search by procedure, from delivery to MRI and dialysis. Publish what the estimate covers, what it excludes, how deposits work and who to ask for a written estimate. A range nobody can explain does more harm than none.

How it works

Typical agency approach versus Enterprise SEO done properly

Typical: Clinic staff edit the doctor page whenever they remember.
Done properly: Every profile generated from the credential record: name, MMC and NSR numbers, qualifications, specialty, branches and clinic sessions, under wording rules your medical director signed once.
Typical: Foreign patients get a contact form on the English site.
Done properly: A route of their own, the one international patient desks are built around: language, deposit, visa letter and airport pickup, beside the same doctor profiles local patients read.
Typical: A new microsite for every branch or acquired hospital.
Done properly: One domain with a section per branch. A consultant who practises at two hospitals has one profile, and each branch keeps its own Business Profile and emergency line. Surgeons who run bone and joint units keep one profile that every site links to.
  1. Audit. I count every consultant profile, specialty page and branch page, with its approval reference, and check who ranks for doctor names, specialty with city and screening searches in English, Malay and Mandarin.
  2. Govern. Your medical director and I settle the profile fields and wording rules. Your compliance team and I choose the first pages to send for approval.
  3. Build. I build the profile template, the credential feed and the first condition pages for one branch.
  4. Scale. I extend to every branch, then Malay and Mandarin versions and the health screening packages.
  5. Report. A monthly report shows appointment requests and calls from search by branch and specialty, pages still awaiting approval, and profiles of departed doctors retired.

What should SEO for a hospital cover beyond service pages?

The directory, the branches and the approval route. Consultant profiles are the largest page set most hospitals own, and they rank for names patients already know. Branch profiles carry hours and emergency numbers. Without a plan for MAB applications, even good pages wait.

How should a hospital group split search between the group site and its branches?

One domain, a section per branch, one profile per doctor. Specialty pages sit at group level and link to each branch that offers the service. A fertility unit inside a hospital competes with standalone IVF centres on its own terms, so it needs its own section and its own approved wording.

Search landscape

Where Private Tertiary Hospitals demand sits, and what the top results miss

Query clusterIntentTypical gap
Doctor name and find a doctorBook a named consultant, or find one by specialtyThe generic find a doctor results were third-party directories, not hospital directories
Specialty with a placeChoose a specialist close to homePeople pair a specialty with a city or region, such as cardiologist klang valley, so each specialty and branch pair needs a page
Best hospital and rankingsShortlist hospitals before choosing a doctorAward pages and listicles shared the results
Costs, deposits and packagesEstimate a bill before admissionPeople split private hospital cost malaysia by procedure: delivery, MRI and dialysis
Panel hospitalsConfirm a medical card is accepted at a branchPeople pair panel hospital with one insurer or takaful name at a time
Original analysis

Of the top five pages for the head query on 14 October 2026, the one hospital SEO guide names neither the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act nor the Medicine Advertisements Board, and says nothing about doctor directories across branches. It mentions the Malaysian Medical Council only as a registration check.

What does a patient need from a panel hospital page?

A yes or no before admission. People pair panel hospital with one insurer or takaful name, so a page per panel works: which branches accept it and what a guarantee letter needs. Lists kept by takaful panel networks and insurers should agree with yours, so check them each quarter.

Will this survive review?

The approval chain, the regulator and what SEO will not promise

Who signs off: Clinical department head, for the conditions and services described then Group marketing or digital then Medical director or medical advisory committee, for clinical accuracy and profile wording then Legal and compliance then Medicine Advertisements Board application, for promotional content.

Regulators that touch your claims: Ministry of Health Malaysia, Medicine Advertisements Board, Malaysian Medical Council.

Constraints on what you can publish

  • Advertisements for health services offered by private hospitals need prior approval from the Medicine Advertisements Board. MOH says self-regulation is not permissible under the Medicines (Advertisement and Sale) Act 1956.
  • Website information on doctors, meaning names, photographs, qualifications and specialties, must be informative and simple, without laudatory remarks, and goes to the Board for prior approval (MMC guideline, 4.17.1 and 4.17.3).
  • Facilities may announce recognised awards and accreditation without overemphasising them (4.11). Claims to be the best are unethical for practitioners (2.6).
  • The Board's policy bars before and after pictures (MAB 2/2019) and asks that statistical claims rest on Malaysian data where it exists (MAB 5/2011).
  • Once a format is approved, changes to charges, hours and the approved web address need only a written notice to the Board (MAB 7/2006).

What SEO will not promise

  • A position for any doctor, specialty or hospital name
  • A number of appointments, admissions or screening packages sold
  • A decision by the Medicine Advertisements Board or the MMC. They decide, and your medical director decides what may be claimed clinically. I prepare the pages and the submission pack

This is SEO governance, not legal advice. Your compliance and legal teams decide what you may claim.

Original analysis

MMC guidance already defines the doctor profile: name, photograph, qualifications and specialty, without laudatory remarks, approved by the Board before publication. MAB policy lets charges, hours and the approved web address change on written notice. So a profile has fixed approved fields and separate operational blocks.

Which hospital pages count as advertisements the Board must approve?

MOH says all advertisements for health services offered by private hospitals need prior approval, and MMC guidance sends website content on facilities and doctors to the Board. Where a plain health article ends and an advertisement starts is the Board's judgement. Ask before publishing, and log the answer for every similar page.

What does Act 586 mean for a hospital's search pages?

A private hospital operates under a Ministry of Health licence, and the 2006 Regulations under the Act, as MMC's guideline quotes them, bar advertisements that mislead the public on the type or nature of services. Every service page should describe only what the licensed branch actually provides.

Should a hospital site explain how to raise a complaint?

Yes. People searching this will find an answer somewhere, and a calm page from you beats a forum thread. Explain your patient relations process, response times and contact points, and link the Malaysian Medical Council page for complaints about a practitioner.

How can a hospital compete for best hospital searches without calling itself best?

With recognised awards and accreditation, announced on its own site and not overemphasised, which MMC guidance allows. A plain accreditation page naming the body, the scope and the expiry date gives patients and AI assistants evidence a listicle cannot. Let third parties use the word best.

Can a hospital publish patient reviews on its own pages?

Not as treatment success stories. MAB policy does not allow advertisements that use patients receiving treatment, and MMC guidance warns that advertising may raise illusory hopes of a cure. Feedback on waiting times, billing clarity or parking is different, and compliance decides where, if anywhere, it appears.

Risk reversal

What I commit to instead of a ranking promise

A baseline before any work. The keywords, their current positions and their search demand are written down at the start, so there is a baseline to argue with later.
Reporting against that same baseline. Not a fresh set of keywords chosen after the fact because they happened to improve.
The documents are yours. Audits and playbooks are written to be handed to your in-house team or another agency. Nothing is locked to me.
One named expert. Dr. Faiz Azizan does the work. Not a rotating pool of account managers.

No profile goes live with a qualification line that cannot be traced to the doctor's registration or your credentialing file. An untraceable line is held back and listed for your medical director, not guessed.

I will not promise you position one. No honest SEO provider can, because Google decides rankings. What I commit to is the process above, written down before work starts.

Is this for you

Who this is for, and who it is not for

This is for you if
  • You run two or more private hospitals, or one hospital whose online consultant list runs into the hundreds
  • Your hospitals share one booking or patient administration system that pages can link into
  • Credentialing keeps each doctor's qualifications and specialist registration in a record the website could read
This is not for you if
  • You want pages calling a surgeon or a hospital the best in Malaysia
  • Promotional pages go live without an MAB approval reference, and that will not change
  • Each consultant's own team runs their page and nobody may standardise it

How can a hospital group tell whether a healthcare SEO agency knows the Board rules?

Give them one approved MAB advertisement and one current doctor profile, and ask what they would change and what would need a new application. An agency that suggests success stories, best claims or before and after pictures has not read the Board policy.

What does a hospital's head of digital marketing need from an outside SEO specialist?

Work the team cannot easily do alongside campaigns: the directory inventory, the technical repair list, the approval batching and a monthly report by branch. The team keeps the calendar and the doctor relationships, and receives templates and documents it can keep running.

Questions this sector asks

Frequently asked questions

What does the size of our doctor directory do to the quote?

It is the biggest input. The Custom quote is built from the profile count, the number of branches, the languages profiles appear in and how many condition pages need MAB applications. I count those first and confirm the quote against the counts.

Does an MAB application slow the whole programme down?

It sets the pace for promotional pages, not for repairs. Broken URLs, branch profiles, page speed and structured data need no application and start first. Whether one approved format can carry many profiles is the Board's call, so I ask before building the template.

Who decides what a consultant's profile may say?

The doctor confirms the facts, the medical director signs the wording rules and the Board approves advertising content. MMC guidance sets the edge: name, photograph, qualifications and specialty, stated simply. I map those steps and prepare the pages. I do not decide what a doctor may claim.

Our consultants run their own social accounts. Does this touch them?

Only where they link to the hospital. MMC guidance applies the Code online and calls self-promotion on social media inappropriate. Give each consultant one approved profile address to link to, so their posts lead to facts the hospital has checked.

Our group site was rebuilt last year. Why look at search again?

Rebuilds usually move doctor and specialty URLs, while bookmarks, insurer lists and directories keep the old ones. The inventory shows how many still resolve, and redirecting them is often the quickest gain a hospital group has.
